Design your environment: make good habits easy and bad habits awkward

Willpower is fragile. Environment design is durable.

Reduce friction (make it easy)

  • Keep tools open and visible (editor, notes, project board).
  • Prepare the first click the night before.
  • One-tap timers, a clean desk, and pinned checklists.

Add friction (make it awkward)

  • Move social apps off your phone’s home screen.
  • Add a password wall or blocker to distracting sites.
  • Keep snacks in the hardest cabinet, not the desk.

Prime powerful cues

  • Put the next task at the top of your list with a clear verb.
  • Keep your work-in-progress visible (kanban, calendar blocks).
  • Leave a “breadcrumb” note for tomorrow.

Try it in 2 minutes (no login)

  1. Open Quick Todo List.
  2. Pin your next three actions and set H/M/L.
  3. Drag the top action to now and start.
  4. Close one distraction.
